Fjell Fortress - Museum Vest
Festung Norwegen. In 1942, Hitler gave the order to build the Atlantic Wall, a 2.685km, continuous coastal defence that stretched from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Pyrenees in the south. The purpose of the fortification was to defend German-occupied Europe against invasion from the British. Between 1942 and 1945, Fjell Fortress was built by German engineers in Organisation Todt, Norwegian volunteers and conscripts, Danes, Belgians, the Polish, Czechs - and Russian POWs. With a triple cannon on the mountain at Fjell, the Germans could strategically control the coastline and the passage into Bergen. After the Second World War, the Norwegian Army took control of Fjell Fortress, originally as part of their Coastal Artillery, and then as a radar station.
